PUNS: 7 Things Families Should Know
Planning for your child’s future can feel overwhelming. PUNS is one step families can take to begin planning for future supports and services.
1. What is PUNS?
PUNS is Illinois’ statewide database for people with developmental disabilities. It helps the State understand who may need services and supports.
2. Who May Qualify?
PUNS is for individuals with qualifying developmental disabilities, such as intellectual disability, autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and other related conditions.
3. Why Should I Sign Up?
Start planning early. PUNS helps families prepare for future services, even if your child does not need them right now.
4. How Do I Sign Up?
Families register through an Independent Service Coordination (ISC) agency. You will complete an application and provide documentation of your child’s disability and other required information.
5. What Happens After I Sign Up?
Keep your information current. Families complete an annual update and should report important changes in their child’s needs, situation, or contact information.
6. Does PUNS Guarantee Services?
No. Being on the PUNS list does not guarantee that an individual will receive services. Selection and eligibility for services occur when funding becomes available.
7. What Services Could Be Available?
If selected and determined eligible, services may include home-based supports, residential services, community programs, job coaching, transportation, therapies, and other supports.
